The Tesla Outlet Adapter turns a compatible car’s charge port into household power. It is not an outlet built into the cabin. Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual says to snap the adapter onto a Gen 3 Mobile Connector, plug the handle into the charge port, and plug the device into the adapter. The 5-20 adapter is rated 120 volts, 20 amps, and 2.4 kW.

The same official chapter says the adapter is only available for Model Y Performance and excludes Canada. It works only with a Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Do not use a Gen 2 Mobile Connector. The car must be unlocked and in Park. After the Mobile Connector is connected, the car may run a software update before power sharing starts. Status lights stream green away from the car while it is supplying a load.

Power comes from the high-voltage battery. A discharge limit can be set on the touchscreen or in the app. When the pack falls below that limit, output stops. Tesla says Powershare will not start if remaining energy is under 5 percent. Leaving a device plugged in drains the high-voltage pack, not the low-voltage battery. Tesla warns not to connect a power source such as a solar panel or an external battery to the adapter.

That conflicts with treating any Model Y, or a whole house, as the use case. The official Model Y page does not name Model Y Premium. It does not describe feeding a house panel. This is appliance power on the Mobile Connector’s cable. Confirm the car and firmware in the in-car Manual app, as the Gen 3 Mobile Connector manual states that not every Tesla supports Powershare.

What the official manual states is Performance-only availability, Canada excluded, Gen 3 only, the 2.4 kW ceiling, the 5 percent floor, Park and unlock, and the solar warning. What it does not show is a shop VIN list for other trims, or a whole-home backup rating.

Skip the adapter if the car is not a Model Y Performance, if the owner is in Canada, or if the only Mobile Connector on the hook is Gen 2. Skip it if the job is whole-home backup or a load above 2.4 kW. Skip it if the high-voltage pack cannot stay above the discharge limit.
