Home Assistant 2026.8 is a software update the project titled Approachable by design. In a house already running Home Assistant, most of that is wording and menus, not a new box. New Home Assistant OS installs drop the :8123 port from the address. Existing installs keep the old address and port.

Web server settings, including the port, can now be changed in the interface. If the change is not confirmed within five minutes, the previous settings come back. Bookmarks, other services, and the mobile app still need the new address if the port is changed. YAML web-server settings are imported into the interface on first start after the update.

The release also strips advanced and expert labels, renames Developer Tools to Tools, lets entity IDs be renamed and reordered, and rebuilds the Home Assistant Cloud page as an overview with guided setup. Automations gain vibration conditions and a moon-phase trigger. Favorite cards can be starred in the card picker. Devices that were merged across two integrations are split. Automations keep working, but a repair may appear if a device was set up twice.

Updating needs an existing Home Assistant install and a backup first. Home Assistant Green is official hardware that starts after power and Ethernet are plugged in. Internet is required for that first setup. Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is official Assist hardware for a system that already exists. Neither is required to take 2026.8.

The blog’s approachable claim is UI and defaults. Home Assistant still runs without a subscription. Home Assistant Cloud from Nabu Casa is optional paid remote access, voice assistant links, and encrypted backups. The official Cloud page says Home Assistant works fully without it.

The same notes list breaking changes. Robot vacuum battery_level is gone on several brands. Use the vacuum’s battery sensor. UniFi Protect now needs console 7.1 or newer, drops AI Port devices, and moves detection scores. Volvo On Call is removed. Paperless-ngx needs server 2.19 or newer.

Skip the update until those breaking items are checked against the house. Skip Cloud if a subscription is not wanted. Skip buying Green or Voice just because 2026.8 shipped. The release is an update, not a hardware bundle.
