Credentials sit in the wallets people already carry — Apple, Google, and Samsung have committed — and the device-to-reader exchange uses asymmetric cryptography, which means each side proves identity without sharing a reusable secret that travels with every tap.

The spec covers Near Field Communication (NFC) for tap-to-access, Bluetooth Low Energy for user-initiated longer-range unlocks, and Bluetooth LE plus Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for hands-free authentication. Readers are meant to work without network coverage, so the same credential story can cover a front door, a garage, or an elevator. For a home buyer that is the decision filter — mix-and-match certified locks and readers instead of another single-app ecosystem. The open gaps are real: Aliro 1.0 is entering certification and commercialization, not a guaranteed shelf full of residential hardware; secure key sharing is named as a later phase with backward compatibility, not a day-one feature.
